Lidia Argondizzo

Lidia Argondizzo 1989-90

Lidia Argondizzo was born in Italy and migrated to Australia when she was 7.

Lidia was first elected to Northcote City council in 1987 for the ALP Socialist Left. In 1989 she was the first woman and youngest person to be sworn in as Mayor of Northcote City. She won in a close vote against Independent Keren Franzi 5-4.

Lidia believed the biggest issue facing the city at the time was the environment. The biggest projects for the council were recycling, the municipal tip, the Recreational Needs Study and the extension of Northcote Plaza. Under Lidia’s direction Northcote council undertook studies of the Conservation Strategy and Darebin Creek Concept Plan.
