Stokes swimming hole - Yarra River
Content Warning: article contains fatal accident
Stokes swimming hole was located on the Yarra River near Yarraford Avenue, Alphington. Due to changes in the river flow since the 1950s it no longer exists.
The swimming hole was the site of a tragic drowning in December 1933 when 15 year old Jeffrey Yelland fell into the river and never surfaced. His uncle Ernest Yelland testified at the inquest that Jeffrey had attacks which left him unconscious at least twice a month. This may have contributed to his death.
