Dairies in Preston

During the 1920s Preston had a strong dairy industry. The suburb was still largely undeveloped, especially in comparison to its southern neighbour Northcote and it had good pasture land and good clean water in the Merri and Darebin Creeks. There were over 60 dairies operating in and around Preston, delivering their milk and other dairy products to neighbouring suburbs. Preston thought particularly highly of their home grown product and believed the quality of their milk was responsible for the low infant mortality rate in the suburb.
