The City of Darebin is home to people from over 153 countries who speak 148 different languages.

Nearly one-third of our residents were born overseas, and for close to half, both parents were born outside of Australia.

Our physical and digital collections of community language resources are one of the ways we meet the needs of our diverse community and give everyone the opportunity to learn and grow.

Community languages in our branches

We have a range of fiction, non-fiction, CDs, DVDs, board books, magazines and talking books for children and adults at each of our branches in the following community languages:

  • Arabic
  • Italian
  • Chinese
  • Greek
  • Vietnamese
  • Hindi (magazines & DVDs only)
  • Macedonian
  • Spanish
  • Punjabi

Spanish books and magazines are now available! You can borrow popular fiction, including Spanish and South American authors. Works in translation, non-fiction and children’s books in Spanish. Magazines are also available in both physical and digital formats.

We also have bilingual picture books in a range of languages at each branch, with a Somali children's book collection in Reservoir.
