Preston Proclamation Arch 1926
On 14 July 1926 Preston was proclaimed as a City and a special archway was erected at the southern entrance to the city on High Street, outside the Junction Hotel.
This archway was part of the decorations and ‘both by day – when it was be-flagged and by night – lit up with coloured electric lights was well worthy of its place and a credit to the builders.’
The actual proclamation ceremony took place at Cramer Street Park and was attended by local dignitaries including the Mayor (Councillor Llewellyn Jones) and the State Governor (Lord Somers).
‘It was a memorable occasion on which it received official recognition of its elevation to the highest plane of civic aspiration that it is possible to attain.’
