Local history

Darebin Libraries offers a number of resources at our library branches and online to assist with your local history research. 

Our online resources include:

  • Darebin Heritage - our local history website where you can browse through over 1,000 articles on Darebin's history, along with photographs, historical newspapers, oral histories and even fun local history activities for children.
  • Discover Historical Darebin - You can search through over 3,000 historical items in this extensive online catalogue. Copies of our photographs can be purchased from as little as $10. Find more information on our Fees and Charges page.

All four of our branches have a collection of printed local history books.

At Preston Library we also hold a number of other resources accessible on our Family History PCs, including:

  • local newspapers dating back to 1888
  • directories
  • City of Northcote rate books from the 1890s.
