James Lambert

(1838-1914)

James Lambert was a Londoner who arrived in Victoria in 1852. Coming from a family of tanners, Lambert worked all over Victoria and New South Wales before settling in Preston in 1880. He quickly established the Gowerville tannery, employing one staff member. By 1888 this had expanded to nine staff, processing up to eighty hides per week. He specialised in calf and kangaroo leather.
