34 Walker Street, Northcote

The house at 34 Walker Street, Northcote, which is near the Westgarth Railway station, was the home of William Henry Dennis, an immigrant from Cornwall who became Councillor and President of Jika-Jika Shire. When Northcote was named as a borough in 1883, Jika-Jika became Preston and Dennis became Northcote's 2nd mayor (1884-85) after Edward Bastings. The walls are built of solid bluestone, with polychromatic brickwork. The house was owned by Dennis until at least the late 1920s when it was leased to Constable Alex Kennedy.
