18 Hartington Street, Northcote
The house at 18 Hartington Street, Northcote (opposite Northcote Railway Station) has many features of both the Edwardian and Art Nouveau styles. It is built on land sold to William Rucker in 1840, which was then divided to create Hartington Street in 1883. By 1889, the Whittlesea railway line had been located adjacent to the street but it remained devoid of houses until around 1900 when there was a building boom. Michael Fitzgerald, who was a builder, bought blocks 17 and 18 of Hartington Street. In 1910 he built No.17 for himself and, around 1912, built No. 18 for Thomas Tunnecliffe, a Victorian native of Irish descent.
