Corporal Henry Rogers
(1881 approx. - 1917)
Corporal Henry Rogers (6 Infantry Battalion) was born and lived in both North Preston and Reservoir and, according to in a Preston Leader tribute, was referred to as the first man from Reservoir to be "killed in action".
He had previously served in the Engineering Corps in Wellington, New Zealand, where he was noted as marksman and won several significant shooting competitions. Curiously, despite his considerable experience, he was rejected from enrolling as an Australian serviceman five times. The increasing shortage of recruits saw him finally accepted.
He embarked on his service from Melbourne on HMAT Nestor in October 1915.
He was 36 when he died in 1917 and is buried at Villers Bretonneaux, France.
