Sir Stafford Northcote
Sir Stafford Northcote was believed to be a friend of the Surveyor-General at the time, Andrew Clarke, and it is generally believed that this is how Northcote was named. Sir Stafford attended Eton and Oxford University, before becoming private secretary to W.E. Gladstone. One of Sir Stafford's sons, Lord Henry Stafford Northcote, became the 3rd Governor-General of Australia.
