John (Jack) Ryder
Jack Ryder played most of his long and distinguished career for the Collingwood Cricket Club but, in the 1933/34 season, Collingwood were disqualified from the VCA due to the club’s ground not complying with VCA standards, so he played at Northcote, appearing in six matches. Otherwise Ryder played for Collingwood over a span of 35 years, and was captain for 25 years. He also served on the committee for 57 years, and had long terms as coach, president and vice president.
Ryder’s exploits extended far beyond district level. He played 20 tests for Australia including a stint as captain in 1928/29, recording a batting average of 51.63 and three centuries. He served as a selector for the national team from 1946 to 1970. Ryder is also a legend of Victorian State cricket, playing 80 matches including 20 as captain and serving as a state selector for 39 years. A highlight for Ryder was his contribution of 295 in Victoria’s still world record first class score of 1107, made against NSW in 1926.
