William “Bluey” Summers

William “Bluey” Summers was only 160 cm tall and weighed just 65 kg, but was described by former Preston Football Club secretary Ern Hannah as the most courageous player he had seen play for Preston. Summers played 122 consecutive games for Preston, rejecting opportunities to play League football, before ‘retiring’ from senior football to assume the role of Captain-Coach of Preston’s reserves. Summers provided the highlight of Preston’s return to the VFA in 1926 when he won the Recorder Cup, awarded to the Association’s Best and Fairest Player.
