James G. Membrey

(1862 - 1940)

James Membrey served as the Member for Jika Jika in the State Legislative Assembly from 1907 to 1917 before retiring due to bad health. Membrey was particularly interested in local transport and was a driving force behind the construction of the railway line from Clifton Hill to Preston and the Westgarth to Alphington line. As a reward for his hard work in sponsoring the development of a tram service along St. Georges Road to West Preston, Membrey laid the foundation stone for the new bridge that crosses the Merri Creek on St. Georges Road.
