Frederick J. Plant
Frederick Plant was born at the Peacock Inn, Northcote in 1862, his father George being the publican there. George Plant was to be twice mayor of Northcote, a feat surpassed by his son who was to serve five terms as mayor.
Frederick, like his father, played an active role in the local community. Amongst his many roles were founding member of the Northcote Bowling Club, footballer with the Melbourne Football Club, Justice of the Peace. His job as a sworn valuer with the National Trustees Company saw him travel extensively throughout Victoria.
Plant was first elected to Northcote Council in 1897 and was to remain there until his retirement in 1918. During that time he was Mayor of Northcote in 1900/01 and 1901/2. After W. Dennis held the position in 1902/3, Plant returned to serve the next three years as mayor.
Plant was living at 202 Clarke Street at the time of his death in December 1934.
