Walter Glanfield

Mayor of Northcote (1918-1919, 1934-1935 & 1942-1943)

Walter Glanfield was Mayor of Northcote 3 times – 1918-1919, 1934-1935 and 1942-1943. He was elected to the Northcote Council in 1911 and elected Mayor in 1918. He traded as a herbalist and masseur in Bridge Road, Richmond under the name of Charles Burton.

In 1919, he was charged by police with 'having illegally used an instrument on a young woman, with intent to procure a certain event' and subsequently sent for trial. It was in connection with his business that the charge arose. However, the case for the prosecution broke down, when he produced an impeccable alibi for the time of the alleged offence - he was attending a Red Cross function in the Northcote Town Hall.
