Frank Arthur Harris
Frank Arthur Harris was born in Melbourne in 1853. Harris became prominent in Preston in 1878 when he started The Fitzroy Steam Brick Pipe Tile and Pottery Works in Collier Street. His business was successful up until he sold his interest in 1888, getting out at the right time as the Maritime Strike of 1890 and the depression of the early 1890’s saw the new company, the Builders’ Brick and Tile Company, forced into liquidation in March 1893. Harris meanwhile devoted his time to municipal affairs, including a term as President of Preston Shire in 1892-93. He also built a mansion, 'Barunah', also known as the Tower House, which is one of the grandest homes still standing in Darebin corner Dundas & Newcastle St.
